Matthew's Bio
Matt has been competing in surf competitions since he was 7. At 9 years old he entered the Quiksilver under 10s world championships In France. After 3 days competing he made it to the final and finished 3rd. It was the highest placing for a British surfer. Matt was then made a member of the Quiksilver UK squad.
At 13 he was taken by Quiksilver to a training camp in Australia and surfed with some of the top surfers in the world. At 15 he became the British Schools champion after winning the under 16s Event in Devon. At 16 he was picked for the Great British Junior under 18 team, to compete at the World championships in New Zealand. The team finished in a respectable 11th place.
In 2011 he competed in his first Pro Am under 21 contest in France and surfed well enough to make it through the first 2 rounds. Also this year he was picked to surf for Jersey in the Senior European Championships held in Bundoran Ireland. The Jersey team finished in 5th place, which was a good result. He won the AIB Junior Series of three contests. Then he won the Channel Island Junior contest and on the same day, Matt won the Channel Islands Men’s open title. Matt is the youngest surfer to have won this competition.
Other notable nominations who were shortlisted: Charlie Rio, Chantelle Coote and Josh Evans.
The Jersey Surfboard Club congratulates Matthew and wishes the thank AIB Jersey for their support in 2011.

Saturday brought good swell conditions for the running of the Jersey Surfboard Club Channel Island Championship. Holding the competition later in the year paid off with competitors enjoying a the remnants of a deep low. Waves were consistently 3-4ft with a strong and quite chilly northerly wind.
The Under 18 girls were in the water first to set the tone for the day and in difficult conditions Lucy Walker found the right wave to display conviction and control to score the highest wave score of the heat and take the under 18 title.
The Under 18 boys saw some ferocious surfing with a number of surfers producing dynamic and exciting manoeuvres in the critical parts of the wave. Some great surfing from Josh Evans And Ben bates saw them join Alex Vibert and Matt Chapman in the final. However it was Chapman’s day as dominated the final to take the Under 18 crown. Champman posted the highest score of the event with a barrel followed by a huge floater in his Semi Final.
As part of the Under 18 category there were a number of under 14 surfers fighting it out for the Under 14’s Championship. Hayden Bishop recently crowned AIB under 14 champion again dominated his opponents to take the Under 14 Channel Island Championship crown.
The Senior Men’s championship once again provided some of the most exciting surfing which saw a number of experienced competitors displaying controlled but dynamic surfing in good surf conditions. Ben Chapman, fresh from his success in the European Championships in Ireland, looked sharp and managed to clinch the title after some good wave exchanges between all the surfers.
Mark Durbano ran away with the masters title with some dynamic and exciting surfing in an event that saw a very high standard of surfing from all the competitors. Mark’s backside attack impressed the judges – his power and flow met the judging criteria and subsequently he was rewarded. Michael Charlton demonstrated his fitness and performed well and Piers Gould surfed with finesse and classic style to surf into second and third respectively.
The Grand Masters saw the veterans of the group take to the water with nearly 100 years of surfing experience between them. It was the most eagerly anticipated competition of the event as Simon Gould faced off against Dave “woof” Ferguson and former European Ladies Champion Arlene Maltman. In difficult conditions it was Simon Gould who came away with the win. Dave “woof “ Ferguson was awarded the wipe-out of the competition for numerous waves but still did enough to snatch second in the dying seconds of the heat.
Arlene Maltman took to the waters again to compete for the For the Ladies Open Title. Chantelle Coote and newcomer Phobe Gould were her competition in the final of this blue ribbon event for Ladies Surfing in the Channel Islands. In the end it was Chantelle Coote’s flowing turns that clinched her victory and the open title.
The Longboard final saw a number of experienced competitive surfers battle it out for the title. Favourtie Josh Le Marquand didn’t quite find his form in the tricky conditions and failed to back up his score with a second good wave. Ben bates surfed well throughout the contest but it was local legend Cole Jouanny who produced the much needed wave scores to take the title. Cole’s repertoire of old school and progressive surfing impressed the judges. This is Cole’s first Channel Island Longboard title after a number of years of coming up just a little short.
The final event to take to the water was the Men’s Open Final. This is the event which sees the best surfers from the Channel Islands battle it out to claim the top spot. This year’s final did not disappoint as four of the islands tops surfers, Christian Bolletta, Piers Gould, Ben Chapman, and the younger Matt Chapman took to the water. All the competitors surfed well in difficult high tide conditions and a strengthened northerly wind. All demonstrated some stunning surfing. However it was to be Matt Chapman’s day as he executed some powerful and progressive turns and deservedly took the top spot.
The Jersey Surfboard club would like to thank all the sponsors of the event, The Watersplash and the judges for giving up their valuable time, and the spectators for making this event so memorable.

AIB Junior Series Round 3
Great surf greeted the competitors last Sunday for the final round of the AIB Summer Series as the postponed under 16 and under 18 events got under way. Ben Bates surfed to a third consecutive win in the under 16 division with Josh Evens and Hayden Bishop in second and third respectively.
The under 18 girls was hotly contested with Megan Vibert taking first place and the overall crown in the series followed closely by Chantelle Coote and Lucy Walker.
European Junior Longboard champion Josh Le Marquand held off stiff competition to take the longboard title with Alex Vibert in close second.
The final of the under 18 event was a spirited affair with Matt Chapman taking the victory and the overall series win with some progressive turns. Josh Evens surfed well in second place for the event showing great promise for his future in the under 18’s category. Alex Vibert’s 3rd was enough to place him second in the overall event.
The Jersey Surfboard club would like to thank the sponsors AIB, Laneez, as well as the Judges for their time effort and support.
AIB Junior series round 3, Under 16, Under 18, longboard, and Under 18 girls. This Sunday Check in at 9am at Laneez.
As many of you may have heard Surfing GB is largely defunct and we have been in touch with the NGB and Sport Directorate. As a result, the correspondence we have had has been non existent during the latter part of the year. The information sent earlier in the year is attached and is the official contest calendar around which we have based our calendar. While I understand events across the UK have been in flux we have endeavored to keep abreast of any changes, however, due to the disarray these changes have caused the updates have not filtered through. Plus due to the fact we had a full Eurosurf schedule to work around we based our decision to hold the CI's on the date as advertised. We hope this clears up the reasoning behind the decision.
We look forward to a great event and to receiving your entries. Please let us know if you are able to volunteer to help run this event.
Many thanks
2 Channel Island Team members make Eurosurf Finals 2011
Ben Skinner, European Longboard Champion in 2009, is in a consecutive Eurosurf Finals in Ireland tomorrow along with Ben Chapman in the Senior Men's category.
The longboard event will start at 12.30 tomorrow with the Senior Men's starting at 1.10pm. Finals will be held either at Tullan or Bundoran depending on tomorrow's swell. Magic seaweed is forecasting 4ft at 9 seconds with variable winds. Looks like like some nice rideable waves and good conditions.
You can watch live at http://eurosurfbundoran.com/live/
Both Ben's are experienced in competitive surfing and have surfed extremely well to beat Europe's top surfers and make it into the finals. They will judge the conditions tomorrow and with their coach Roley McMichael draw up their game plan. Both competitors will be judged on their best 2 waves.
The JSC wish them the best of luck! (Some nice set waves in their direction!)
13 top Surfers have been chosen to represent the Channel Island’s at this year’s European Surfing Championships to be held in Bundoran, County Donegal, Ireland on 23rd September to the 2nd October.
The team was chosen by a points system over 4 competitions throughout the summer. Poor waves and generally weak conditions made the qualification process tough for the team hopefuls. However surfers got to drop their worst result in the 4 event selection format.
Team manager Roley McMichael says, “I'm very pleased with the team that has come from the long selection process. A brilliant mix of youth and experience in every category.”
Last year the event was held in Jersey when Ben Skinner took the longboard title. This year UK based Skinner will once again join the team. Veteran Mark Durbano will be a strong representative in this year’s masters division. In the women’s division local surfer Shelly McFarling has been awarded a ‘wildcard’ into the event.
Guernsey’s Tom Hill was also awarded a ‘wild card’ into the event. Tom’s fitness and ability in big waves makes his presence in the team an added bonus.
Christian Bolletta made the cut, however due to family commitments he is unable to travel with the team. Jersey’s Nathan Elms, will take his place after placing below Christian in the ratings.
Ben Chapman was a reserve last year but won a hotly contest spot in the senior men’s from last year’s favourite Sam George.
Alice Mcgregor, originally from South Africa, is a newcomer to the local women’s surfing scene. Her extensive experience makes her a favourite to win the overall title for Jersey.
The event will be held in County Donegal in the North West of Ireland. The main contest area will be held at Bundoran Reef, a challenging and renowned spot for surfers around the world.
Arlene Maltman, current JSC President, surfed in the 1984 European Championships in the same spot and thinks the venue will be a challenge, if the waves are big;
“Bundoran can be a hollow, fast and heavy left hander, but I am confident our chosen team will relish those conditions. We will have some very experienced surfers who have traveled and surfed hollow reefs in places like Hawaii and Indonesia. It could be a very exciting showdown with the best surfers in Europe,” she says.
The squad are training with accredited coach George Solh and Dan Harris both AIB Academy coaches.
