AIB/FREEDOM JUNIOR SERIES ROUND 1 2008

The first Event of 2008 kicked of early on Saturday morning and continued through to Sunday afternoon. Glorious weather and a clean 1ft swell lasted throughout the weekend. The surf favoured the smaller and lighter surfers but Jacob Warr from Vazon Bay, Guernsey, proved that size doesn’t matter and powered his way to take the under 18 title. Executing critical manoeuvres in the small surf did not seem a problem to him, leaving the Jersey under 18 surfers struggling. Jersey team rider for the Jeux des Isles, Matt Chapman, started his 2008 Junior Series campaign with wins in the Longboard and Under 16 Divisions. Performing excellent off the lips and cutbacks gave Chapman the edge in the under 16s and superior nose riding won him the title over Cole Jouanny in the Longboards. Also performing well in the under 16s was Josh le Marquand and Alex Vibert. Le Marquand was able to knock out Nathan Elms, last year’s AIB junior series Champion. Benefiting from a training camp in Hossegor,SW France, Le Marquand managed to score highly on 2 quality waves leaving Elms in his wake. A shock result but well earned. Newcomer Sophie Mcgranahan in the Girls under 14s also surfed out of her skin to gain a 2nd place in her first ever competition. Jenna Kleis eventually took the title by catching long walling lefts. The under 18 girls saw trainee beach lifeguard Abbie Hughes take the under girls title hotly pursued by another newcomer, Lucy Goddard. Goddard will be also joining Chapman in Guadeloupe for the Jeux des Isles. Bradley Ferguson’s smooth style saw him take the under 14 title over the exuberant Freddie Seymour. Ben Bates took the under 12 title and Kitty Brewer the under 10s. Thank you to the Watersplash for use of their land and all the volunteer help who make the competitions possible. KOTG 2008 Watersplash

King of the Groms Jersey Qualifier @ The Watersplash 14/6/08 The UK leg of thr KOTG kicked off at the Watersplash on Saturday with 30 competitors under the age of 16 hoping to be selected for the European qualifier to be held in Hossegor at the end of July. Only the top 2 under 16s and 1under 14 from Jersey will be able to participate in the European qualifier. Matthew Chapman wins King of the Groms Jersey Qualifier and will head to France for the European Qualifier along with Nathan Elms and Ben Bates.. After a delayed start on Saturday the action kicked off with the under 12 and girls divisions showing off their skills to be followed by the highly contested under 14 and under 16 divisions. Standout in the under 14s was Ben Bates who managed to secure high scoring waves in the small onshore surf. Bradley Ferguson and Freddie Seymour did not catch the long inside walling waves leaving Bates to be the clear winner as the final went on. Josh Evans performed well under huge pressure from the more experienced competitors but could not forge ahead of Ferguson and Seymour The under 16s proved that surfing smaller waves with power and flow was still possible. Nathan Elms , The Jeux des Iles Champion, and clear favourite for the event started well with a powerful display on his backhand. Bradley Ferguson clearly not on form failed again to secure any kind of high scoring waves leaving Matt Chapman and Alex Vibert to try and out manoeuvre Elms. As minutes ticked away,Matt Chapman nipped in with 2 long lefts performing nice turns and cutbacks which proved to be the winning formula. Vibert continued to find long rights but could’nt find the all important manoeuvres to win the final. All 3 surfed well under the conditions. Matt Chapman was the eventual winner Surfers selected for the European Qualifier: Matt Chapman, Nathan Elms and Ben Bates Thanks to Quiksilver for their support for the contest. The Watersplash for use of their land and all the volunteer help that makes these competitions happen

AIB/FREEDOM JUNIOR SERIES ROUND 2 2008

AIB JUNIOR SERIES ROUND 2 12th/13th July At the Watersplash Small surf yet again greeted the juniors for round 2 of the Freedom/AIB junior series. First out in the water were the under 10s with some gutsy performances from Arthur and Tom Carey. However the more experienced Gus and Kitty Brewer took off on some clean breaking waves giving them the extra points to dominate in this division The under 12s saw rising star, Josh Evans, give Ben bates a run for his money. Novice to competition, Evans, is improving all the time and shows natural ability. Just loosing out to Bates, Evans will be the one to watch in the future. The under 14s was dominated by Bradley Ferguson. Regaining form after a lack lustre perfomance in the Quiksilver KOTG Jersey qualifier, Ferguson produced an excellent 2 wave combo to push Freddie Seymour into 2nd,Bates 3rd and Evans 4th. Under 14 girls was won by Jenna Klies showing good take off and bottom turn skills to just push ahead of Megan Vibert 2nd,Abbie Goddard 3rd and Tess Letherbarrow 4th Once again the under 18 girls was won by Delia Baker. Chasing hard was surf instructor Abbie Hughes. who came 2nd, Lucy Goddard ran in 3rd with Chaarlotte Bayliss 4th The Longboards was won by Cole Jouanny who outclassed all other competitors with a mix of traditional and modern style of surfing. Matt Chapman was 2nd,Josh le Marquand 3rd and Will Glenn 4th The under 16s proved to be the fiercest competitive surfing of the contest. A full judging panel including a head judge was used to try and differentiate the surfers. From the first minute of the final, all surfers opened up their accounts with good combinations of bottom to top turns. Nathan Elms and Alex Vibert found fast little right inside waves with Matthew Chapman settling for the lefthanders reforming off the outside bank. Bradley Ferguson started well but as the heat progressed he was unable to find the high scoring waves to compete with Elms, Chapman and Vibert. Vibert surfing agressivley and hungry for a win ended up with a wave to wave battle with Chapman as Elms forged away with some top quality off the lips. After 20minutes of excellent surfing, Elms proved to be the clear winner with Matt Chapman running in 2nd by 0.2points over Alex Vibert 3rd and Ferguson 4th The Under 18 boys 2nd round has been postponed until later in the year Current Rankings after 2 rounds Under 10s 1-Kitty Brewer 1900 2-Gus Brewer-1000 3-Hope Southam 900 4-Arthur Carey 810 5-Tom Carey 729 Under 12s 1-Ben Bates 2000 2-Josh Evans 1800 Under 14 1-Bradley Ferguson 2000 2-Freddie Seymour 1800 3-Ben Bates 1620 4-Josh Evans 1453 Under 14 Girls 1-Jenna Klies 2000 2-Megan Vibert 1629 3-Tess Letherbarrow 1359 4-Sophie McGranahan 900 Under 16 1-Matt Chapman 1800 2-Alex Vibert 1620 3-Bradley Ferguson 1354 4-Nathan Elms 1000 Under 18 Girls 1-Abbie Hughes 1800 2-Lucy Goddard 1710 3-Charlotte Bayliss 1458 4-Delia Baker 1000 Longboard 1-Cole Jouanny 2000

Most of the heats took place in good conditions Saturday, with the finals late Sunday afternoon at high tide Splash and Secrets in what could only be described as the best conditions of the summer. The swell kicked in on Sunday afternoon as the tide came in with competitors exploiting the conditions to the max. The standard of surfing was extremely high with senior surfers commenting on the exceptional performance of junior surfer,Alex Vibert, in the open.

Most of the heats took place at the Watersplash but the Senior men semi finals took place at Barge Aground with the finals of the Ladies,Senior Man and Masters at Secrets

Scott Eastwood won the open men's and well as the senior men's title with the best junior being Matt Chapman with Alex Vibert and Freddie Seymour close behind.

In the masters it was a great performance by Nigel Wray who beat European Champ Clayton Lister in a high quality final.

In the open women's, fifteen year old Lucy Goddard came first with Arlene Maltman second.

Lucy then backed up her senior win with the junior girls title with Megan Jones and Megan Vibert just behind.

Earth Wind and Water Surfabout 2008

Earth Wind and Water Surfabout 2008 Christian Boletta takes the Open title for the second year running. Wave selection was key through the early rounds but Boletta kept his composure throughout. Fabian Baker chased Boletta all the way through the final while Sam George and Issac Kibblewhite struggled to find the high scoring waves that they had in the Semi final, which was arguably the best competitive surfing seen in Jersey for a while. Boletta on the back of his victory said “Well the Comp went really well as we actually had some waves over a Weekend for a change!! There was a great level of surfing and some of the Juniors are now showing good progress too.The waves were pretty tricky to surf as they didn't allow for to many turns during the early rounds. During most of my heats it was a case of getting one strong turn in before the waves closed out... However, in the final I managed to get a couple of quick waves and luckily they opened up for me, allowing for several turns. It was a case of the right place at the right time as conditions were deteriorating pretty rapidly during the Open final. The other finalists had been killing in the semi finals but struggled to find the waves in the final. It was a good victory and nice to win it for the second year in a row. “ All ages enter the Surfabout with juniors competing against the seniors. Veterans compete in the Masters and Grandmasters with the oldest surfer being 62yrs. However as there was a fairly heavy swell running many veterans shied away due to their level of fitness and possible high risk of injury. However, Nigel Wray, 44yrs, in Masters round 1 gave a demonstration of top to bottom surfing which was applauded by younger surfers and seniors alike. The Judges rewarded Wray with the highest scoring wave of the whole competition. All the juniors surfed well with Alex Vibert being placed the highest Junior in the Open Event. The ladies and under 18 girls saw impressive performances from Delia Baker ,Lucy Goddard and Abbie Hughes. Baker took the ladies and Hughes the under 18 girls . Jake Powell took the honours in the under18 boys with Sam George taking both Longboard and Senior Man Titles. Outstanding performances also go to Tony'Gunner' Lang and Geoff Hill in the Grandmasters The Jersey Surfboard would like to thank Earth Wind and Water for sponsoring the event and the Watersplash for use of their land

Conditions ranged from 1-2ft at Fistral on the Saturday. All the divisions were completed on the first day with Ben Bates being the only finalist in the under 12s reaching 3rd overall. 8 juniors made it into the top 10. 200 juniors from all over the UK took part.

REPORT COURTESY JEP 23/9/08

THE Billabong British Junior surf championships held at Newquay on Saturday featured 19 young Islanders in a field of 200, with Ben Bates (12) emerging as the only finalist, finishing third overall in the under-12 division.

According to coach Joe Davies, Bates: ‘not only won all of his heats leading up to the final, but surfed with power and flow all the way through the event.

‘Having said that, I’m proud of our team’s performance but have to accept that the English simply dominated the event. The standard of surfing was extremely high and we struggled in the girls’ divisions, but the boys put on a good display in front of the British squad coaches who were keen to see the Jersey team in action.’

Davies’ words were echoed by Dave Ferguson, president of the Jersey Surfboard Club.

‘These championships are the benchmark for the selectors who use them to see who are the best young surfers in Britain. Any aspiring championship surfer has to excel at this level if they want to progress and although only Ben finished in the top three in his age group, another seven made it into the top ten.

‘We have some outstanding prospects, including Matthew Chapman (14) and Nathan Elms (15) who are currently in the British squad while special mention can be made of Jenna Kleiss (14) who finished fifth in her first-ever British championship.

‘Other potential members of the British squad include Bradley Ferguson (14), Freddie Seymour (14) and Alex Vibert (14) while Megan Vibert is up-and-coming, for a 12-year-old.

‘While we’re particularly strong at under-16 and under-14 (boys’) level, as a club we’re concentrating on the girls at the moment, to teach then how to improve their standard in terms of competitive attitude at tournaments such as this.’
