DAY ONE-
Day one of the competition saw Channel Island surfers struggle with 6-8ft conditions giving the French,,Portuguese and Spainish teams an early strangle hold on the event.

Jake Powell, Philip le Neveu and Delia Baker surfed intelligently to secure 2nd round spots. DavId Speller and Jack Seymour have yet to compete as visibility due to late evening sun and mist proved to difficult to judge. They will start early Monday.

All other surfers failed to progress straight to round two but will have another chance to get back into the competition with the repercharge heats which will be staged on Monday.

From relatively small surf on the Saturday a strong northerly swell began to wrap into Doninos beach from the first heat onwards and began to jump up on the sets to hold into the 6ft-8ft range. Philip le Neveu gained the highest scoring wave within the Channel Island Team by managing to steer his body-board from out the back all the way to the inside section. The size of the surf was larger than expected for the first day with contest director Rue Felix also predicting the swell to increase to 4 metres on Thursday.

Fitness, stamina and luck were key elements that determined those that went through into the second round but it was more of case of nerves that hampered the CI team on the first day.

DAY 2-
Day two saw a change in the team’s performance with wins and second places in the repercharge heats making sure the CI team remains in the competition. The French ard Portuguese are beginning to dominate the competition with the Channel Island team sparring mainly with the Wales and Ireland. Conditions dropped to a more manageable size today with the CI surfers racking up high scoring waves. Standout on the day was Jersey surfer Under 16 Jake Powell who is online to progress through to the semi-final stages if continues to impress the judges.

DAY 3 -
The Channel Island team are still holding their own against strong European opposition.

The Surf has reduced in size to a manageable 4ft but forcasters are still warning a swell increase on Thursday to 10ft plus with accompanying onshore winds.

Nathan Elms 13yrs from les Quennevais School produced one of the best scores of his life in round 3 of the under 14 division. Taking a set wave from out the back, Elms’s bottom to top turn combo on his backhand finishing off with a vertical snap through the lip in the shore break gained him a 8.3 points out of a possible 10 points. Spectators and Judges alike applauded Elms for this outstanding wave who then went onto win the heat. This winning wave has earned him 6th place in in the best wave scores in the whole competition behind Mark Lacomare 16yrs from France. This will set him up for the semi final stages.

There was also success for Philip le Neveu and Stephanie Seymour. Seymour hit form at the right moment by winning her round 2 heat with a long ride all the way to the beach. Le Neveu also won his round 2 in the u16 bodyboards

However, there were exits for David Speller and Cole Jouanny from the U18 Bodyboards, Pascal Quemener from the U16 bodyboards, Jack Seymour from the Longboard division and Bradley Ferguson who was unfortunately knocked out in a high scoring heat by Elms in Round 3 in the Under 14 division.

Delia Baker, Jake Powell, Joe Baker, Josh Letherbarrow and Justin Faulkner will be competing tomorrow.

Again fitness was a decisive factor in today’s surfing as competitors who had managed to ride long waves all the way to beach, then had to run 100m back along the beach to the paddle out channel

DAY 4 -
Weather conditions were causing problems for all surfers for today’s surfing. The swell remains at a consistent 4ft with the odd set but the wind has changed direction to strong on shore messing up the shape of the waves.
However the standard of surfing remains high.

AIB Academy surfer and under 18 surfer Josh Letherbarrow nearly won himself a place into round 4 but was denied in the last 15 seconds by Portuguese surfer Joao Guerra who sneaked an inside wave, pulling off a series of bottom to top turns to take second place above Leterbarrow by.5 of a point pushing Leterbarrow into 3rd and out of the competition.

In the under 16s Joe Baker progressed through to round 4 having battled with the conditions all day. Surfing with more confidence and flow Baker will hopefully meet up with Jake Powell into the semi final stages, keeping a Channel Island presence in the highest flight of Europeasn competitive surfing.

Unfortunately Stephanie Seymour and Delia Baker could not gain semi final spots but have managed to gain valuable points for the Channel Island Team. Philip le Neveu .also has not progressed in the under 16 bodyboard

Nathan Elms has spent the day preparing himself for tomorrows round 4 clash against Bem Rebuveni[ISR] Luis Eyre[ENG] and Juan Serna[SPN] which will take place at 10.50 [local time]

The Channel Island team are sitting 8th in the table out of 12 Nations and will be hoping to improve on this if Jake Powell, Nathan Elms and Joe Baker perform well tomorrow.

DAY 5 -
The 3 lions of Jersey , Jake Powell, Joe Baker and Nathan Elms faced yet another barrage of 6-8ft surf on Doninos beach to try and progress into the last stages of the competition..

Elms in the under 14s yet again proved he can compete at European level to win his Repercharge semi final in style with an impressive array of manoeuvres to earn a spot in the final. After 4 days of competition in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions, Elms lacked the spark in his final mainly due to shear exhaustion and was placed 3rd. His overall position in the competetion was 7th

In the under 16s Jake Powell gave 100%in his two heats today. In the first heat Powell tried to sit inside and pick off the hollow lefthanders but unfortunately a couple of 10ft sets rolled in and pushed him out of position. He spent the rest of the heat picking up scraps and fighting for a second place. This was’nt to be and he was forced to surf again in heat 21 repercharge. Giving everything, he just could not find the right wave in the testing conditions and was knocked out of the competition reaching 9th position overall

Baker also in the under 16s had his heat abandoned with 5mins to go due to thunder and lightening. Once the front had passed through the heat was resumed but again like Powell, Baker could not find the right wave to connect from outside to the inside section.

Chief coach Ben Skinner said ‘ An excellent team performance considering the lack of European Competition experience. The team need to work harder on their mental preparation and focus before heats, but this will come with more exposure to this type of contest.’

HUNTER BRITISH SCHOOLS 2007

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 April, 2007 : - - Consistent 4ft clean surf coupled with 25 degree temperatures meant superb conditions for the Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships 2007 at Woolacoombe this weekend.

Despite a brief postponement on Sunday morning due to fog, the contest, held by the British Surfing Association along with Calypso, attracted 120 young surfers aged 12 to 18 from 35 schools across the South West, England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

But it was North Devon which led the way right from the beginning, as last year’s winners Braunton kept the title of Overall Winner. All four of their surfers made it to their finals. Cornwall also put forward some strong surfers, with Billy Norways from St Ives successfully defending the Under 18s title and Newquay’s Josh Hughes taking first place in the Under 16s. Newquay bodyboarder Charlie Strang won the Under 16s bodyboard title.

Jersey’s Will Glenn won first place in the
longboard category while fellow islander Bradley Ferguson impressed the
judges with his gutsy surfing in the Under 14s. In the girls category,
Gwen Spurlock from Swansea also wowed the panel but it was Braunton’s
Karma Worthington who took the title. But the closest final in contest
was for the Under 18 bodyboard, narrowly snatched from Phil Le Neveu by
15-year-old Bournemouth boarder Nat McCabe.

Karen Walton, national director of the BSA, said: “We’ve seen some
awesome action at Woolacombe this year, with some pretty close wins,
which goes to show how exciting this competition can be. We’ve had an
impressive entry from schools across the country, and we are incredibly
grateful to the sponsors, teachers and parents who support the
youngsters in making this happen.”

The Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships 2007 is supported by Calypso Aquajuices, the BSA and Soundworx.

Bolletta Bags the Jersey Open

Christian Boletta takes the Jersey Open title away from last year’s winner Renny Gould. Boletta traded wave for wave with Gould all the way through the final but with 5mins to go Boletta managed to produce the winning ride by taking a set wave and generating enough speed out of the below par conditions to perform an impressive floater finished off with full power top turn throwing buckets of spray. All the finalists put on an extremely polished performance. Gould surfed consistently throughout the contest along with Jonny Wallbridge, the current CI champion from Guernsey, and Sam George. George tipped as favourite for the title just could not find the high scoring rides to worry Boletta and Gould. Wallbridge also struggled in the final. Again not finding the right the waves

Boletta said ‘ It was a great contest, well organised, great turn out and after several 2nd place finishes in previous contests, I really wanted to win it. This is set me up for the European Championships in France in June “

The contest also had a large turn out of juniors hoping to knock out a few seniors. Most impressive performance was from De la Salle College’s Matt Chapman 13yrs who eliminated the current British Universities Champion, Matt le Maistre out of the contest in Round 2. Unfortunately Chapman did not progress from the Quarterfinal stage being out surfed by the more experienced Sam George and James Hick.

The Ladies also took centre stage with Shelly McFarling going head to head with former CI champion Arlene Maltman. McFarling’s snappy repertoire caught the judges eye as did Maltman’s smooth backhand approach. AIB juniors Grace Davies, Delia Baker and Charlotte Bayliss all surfed well but could not catch the two senior girls..

Conditions were 1- 2ft, which made the surfing difficult for the heavier and bigger surfers, but the contest was completed and finished after 2 days of very competitive surfing at the Watersplash. Thanks for all the help with the judging and general helping out by members..

EARTH WIND AND WATER SURFABOUT 2007

Earth Wind and Water Surfabout 2007, Watersplash 26th/27th May

Ben Chapman takes the Earth Wind and Water Surfabout Open title. Surfing consistently in the small surf during the early rounds on Saturday, Chapman came to form in the larger surf on the Sunday, combining excellent bottom to top turns with a polished style. Performing sweeping cut backs on the long left walls at the Watersplash on high tide, Chapman managed to shut the door on Sam George, Josh Letherbarrow and Christian Boletta. Pushing Chapman all the way during the final, George also impressed the judges with his superb competitive surfing but could not find the winning wave to win the title. Letherbarrow and Boletta struggled in the final, failing to connect with anything substantial to worry Chapman and George resulting in a third place for Letherbarrow and a disappointing fourth for Boletta.

Shelley McFarling was firing on all cylinders in the Ladies final taking the title with ease over Arlene Maltman, 2nd, and Charlotte Bayliss, 3rd.

The Senior Men and Masters Final saw the resurgence of Nigel Wray back into competitive surfing. Wray dominated both finals with a demonstration of controlled power surfing fending off the challenge of Ben Chapman, Michael Charlton and Joel Gray in the Senior Man final to continue his form into the Masters final where James Carden and Roley McMichael were suitably dispatched.

The Grandmasters saw surfers of 45yrs and over competing for three titles, 45 and over, 50 and over, and legends 60 and over. The Legends final saw Chris Fairbairn, Richard Bates, Geoff Hill and Bobby Furness take to the water just as the swell began to increase. Fairbairn and Bates soon found their feet and dominated from the start. Fairbairn’s wave selection was key and pipped Bates to the post, with Hill and Furness running in third and fourth place respectively.

The 45s and over and the 50s and over saw polished performances from Peter Chapman and Paddy O’Sullivan. Rookie Jolyon Baker squeezed through his semi final by ousting out the highly competitive David Seymour and Sean Faulkner to get a final spot. Peter Trenchard, Mark Letherbarrow and Tony Lang all lost out narrowly in the semi finals. However it was David Ferguson that stole the show by finding the larger waves easier to handle, performing sweeping cut backs on his back hand taking the title from Peter Chapman, 2nd, Paddy O’Sullivan 3rd and Jolyon Baker 4th.

The Juniors also seemed to find the larger surf challenging with the in form Matt Chapman and Jake Powell spending most of the final paddling with Jake Elms and Bradley Ferguson sitting outside waiting for the set waves. Elms opened his account with a solid wave but failed to catch another of the same standard. Ferguson unfazed by Elms’s earlier attack picked off two set waves performing a series of cut backs and top turns to take the Junior title and highest place U14 in the competition reaching not only the Junior final but the semi final stages in the Open Division as well.

Thanks to Sponsors of the Surfabout, Earth Wind and Water for their support.

Senior European Team 2007

The Jersey Surfboard Club will be at full strength for the European Surfing Championships being held in France next week, says club president Dave Ferguson.

‘’Our big hitters have set aside professional commitments to compete for the island in this most prestigious of amateur events.’’ They include Ben Skinner, the world number 2 ranked longboarder and Scott Eastwood
who is the current Goldrush British Big Wave Riding Champion.

‘’Both surfers have the talent and experience to win major events and will be amongst the favorites in their respective divisions. Scott will be surfing in the senior division (for the over 28’s). We are expecting
him to be amongst the four finalists. We have the same expectations for Ben in the longboard division.’’

Skinner will be joined in the longboard division by local tomato grower, Gordon Blake who is an internationally renowned master of the ‘old school’ style of longboarding. According to Ferguson, ‘’His technique is a complete contrast to Ben’s which is at the forefront of the progressive longboarding movement. Ben and Gordon will be on different sides of the draw so there is a strong possibility they will meet in the final … an intriguing prospect for connoisseurs of either approach.’’

Whilst the Jersey Surfboard Club has organised the team for this year’s championship, it is on behalf of the CI Sufing Federation and draws members from the Guernsey Surfboard Club as well as the JerseyBodyboarders and the Jersey Longboard Riders Association.

“Everybody has pulled together to ensure we have the best surfers heading to the contest’’ said Dave. ‘’Half our Open Division are Guernseymen, including 2005 British University Champion, Matt Le Maistre, and 2006
Channel Island Championship finalists, Johnny Wallbridge and Tom Hill. Our bodyboarders include Jersey Bodyboarder stalwarts and drop knee experts Clint Loake and Colin Laurent as well as the sensational Sophie Dutoit.’’

‘’From our own club, in the Open we have a fantastic trio of Jersey surfers ... Watersplash power surfer, Christian Boletta; style master, Sam George; and representing the north end of St Ouens, Secrets supremo, James Hick. We also have a very strong ladies team made up of current Jersey Open and Surfabout champion, Shelley McFarling as well as our former European champion, the legendry Arlene Maltman. Finally, we have Clayton Lidster who moves up a division from Seniors to Masters (for the over 35’s). Clayton, was our star performer at the last Europeans held in Portugal in 2005 finishing a magnificent third. Once again, he will be focused on making the final.’’

Dave was upbeat about the Channel Island’s overall prospects in the team event. ‘’Looking at our squad, I am confident we can achieve our highest placing since the club’s heydays in the sixties and eighties.
Realistically, we are aiming to beat the Irish and the Welsh but with this group of surfers, who knows? Surfer for surfer, I believe we have a squad to match, if not better the English. If we can do that then I feel
that as a region, the Channel Islands will be ready to compete at the World Surfing Games.’’

The European Surfing Championships will take place between the 16th and 24th of June at Le Plage des Cavaliers in Anglet in the Southwest France. Thanks to sponsors Freedom and Quiksilver for all their support and to all those members who have helped towards raising funds for this event.... JC

Eurosurf day 1 and 2 2007

EUROSURF 2007, PLAGE DES CAVALIERS, ANGLET, FRANCE

16 & 17 JUNE 2007

DAY 1 & 2

FROM JON CARDEN

With conditions at Plages des Cavaliers described as perfect by contest director Ruez Felix, the opening rounds of the European Surfing Championships commenced on Saturday, one day earlier than scheduled. Although many heats were postponed due to the absence of surfers yet to arrive, a number of the Channel Island squad surfed.

Jersey domination
It was the Open division in the water first and the two Jersey surfers with heats, Christian Boletta and James Hick, put on an explosive display of power surfing in the six foot glassy peaks. Boletta outmaneuvered one of the competition favourites, Spanish champion, Carlos Benitez to win his heat and post the seventh highest heat score of the day and Hick completed probably the manouevre of the contest so far with a critical re-entry which sent a curtain of spray twenty feet into the air. Both surfers progress to round two alongside Guernsey squad member Matt Le Maistre who surfed an intelligent heat despite the deteriorating conditions.

Longboarders
There was more success in the Longboards with Ben Skinner and Gordon Blake recording victories. Gordon chose a three finned big wave longboard for his heat and rode the largest swells punctuating smooth turns with lengthy periods on the nose. Whilst the surf was not so favourable for Ben, the world’s second ranked longboarder literally steamrolled his Spanish opponent who chose unwisely to paddle into Ben’s path after the Jerseyman had completed a huge floater. With no damage done both and the Spaniard completed the heat and progressed to round two.

Bodyboards
Our Mens Bodyboarders were less fortunate and Clint Loake and Colin Laurent were relegated to the repercharge rounds despite putting in spirited performances against professional opposition. Indeed, Clint was beaten by South African champion Marc Jucker who was competing for Switzerland.

Ladies
In the Ladies division, Arlene Maltman failed to find a second high scoring ride against German sensation Sonja Hohnscheid and was relegated to the repercharge rounds where she will have a second chance to advance to the finals. Shelley McFarling dominated the first half of her heat but with the waves fast disappearing on the high tide, the event director called off competition for the day and Shelley was forced to leave the water with the result undecided.

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was a characteristically bizarre affair with salt crusted soggy surfers parading in team uniform in front of the media, municipal officials and politicians. Jersey outshone all other teams as well as their Guernsey colleagues with a huge national flag kidnapped from the pole of Close Trust Company’s Esplanade office and when it came to the traditional sand mixing ceremony, bodyboarder Clint Loake stepped up to the podium and poured the island’s finest white sand into the pot from a Jersey milk carton! When later questioned on the origins of the sand, Jon Carden the Channel Island team manager said that due to the lack of decent sandbanks along St Ouens Bay caused by continued reclamation, the Jersey Surfboard Club was forced to collect the sand from the Gunsite slip in St Aubins!

Day 2
In contrast to Saturday’s incredible surf, Sunday dawned with near flat conditions. With a constant procession of rainclouds rolling off the Pyrenees the scene at the contest site could only be described as miserable. Competition finally resumed at 11am but only lasted long enough to complete the opening round of the Bodyboards and first repercharge round of the Longboards. Neither division featured Channel Islands surfers.

Competition is expected to recommence on Wednesday with a rapidly rising swell forecast.

Eurosurf day 4 2007

EUROSURF 2007, PLAGE DES CAVALIERS, SOUTH WEST FRANCE

DAY 4, 19 JUNE 2007

In what proved to be a great hour of competition for the Channel Island squad competing in day 4 of Eurosurf 2007, Shelley MacFarling in the Ladies open division together with Gordon Blake and Ben Skinner in the Longboards all progressed through their heats.

Forced to re-surf her suspended first round match up from day 2, Shelley once again dominated despite having an interference called against her which meant the points from the highest of her two scoring waves were reduced by half, MacFarling still easily progressed in second position behind Garazi Ortun of Spain.

Channel Island success continued in the Longboards. First in the water in front of Podium 1 was Gordon Blake who once again employed his wave knowledge to find the best waves. He progressed along with Antoine Delepro of France.

In the final heat of the day, Ben Skinner survived an incident packed twenty minutes against Jonathan Larcher (France), Bruno Gandela (Portugal) and Adam Griffiths (England). As conditions deteriorated, Ben gambled on taking two early waves. It was also a strategy adopted by Larcher and with the clock ticking down, both the French and Jersey surfers appeared to reached an ‘entente cordiale’ whereby each ensured the Portugese and English riders were challenged for every wave they wished to catch. The tactics were fair but uncompromising and in the end, Gandela was forced into an interference call against Larcher and Griffiths only managed to catch one wave.

Conditions are set to improve for tomorrow with the swell set to rise in the afternoon and it is expected that all members of the Channel Island squad will compete.

Eurosurf day 5 2007

Day 5 20/6/07

Today we had Sophie Dutot advance from her repercharge in the Ladies Bodybody Event. Scott Eastwood in the Senior Man and Clayton Lidster in the Masters both have progressed to the repercharge finals so a good finish here will guarantee a finals place. Tom Hill , Jonny Wallbridge and Matt le Maistre from Guernsey are into round 2 of the open. Jersey’s Sam George lost his first round heat but came first in his repercharge heat moving him also into the second round of the Open. Bodyboarders Colin Laurent and Clint Loake both progressed to the next round and won their repercharge heats. Arlene Maltman surfed a great heat to advance too in the Ladies. All in all a great days surfing from the Jersey surfers and now the contest really heats up.. Team Coach Jonny Carden said “ The surfers who entered the water today gave 100%. We are holding our own against strong opposition . Morale is still high and we are feeling really confident”.

The Channel Island Team will be looking to beat Wales and Ireland with a strong chance of beating the English if all the team surf well tomorrow. Swell is set to increase....Jon Carden Team Coach

AIB/Laneez Junior Series Round 1 2007

AIB/Laneez Junior Series Round 1 Waterspalsh Sat 23/6/07

While the senior team were enjoying success in France, the Juniors started their competition series with some explosive surfing in the windy and messy surf at St Ouens. Impressing in the Under 18 Challenge Cup was AIB Academy surfer, Nathan Elms 14yrs, who dominated his heats throughout the whole day giving a polished and professional display to win the 1st Round. Pushing him all the way was under Joe Baker 17yrs who again impressed the judges with a professional display.

The Challenge cup is based on the Man on Man format where only 2 surfers enter the water rather than 4..With a repercharge round in round 2 , surfers can have another chance to enter the competition if they were beaten in round 1. This format is used by the ASP[Association of Surfing Professionals] on the WCT[World Championship Tour] and proved a huge success with Jersey’s top junior surfers.

Running along side the Challenge Cup was the Novice division, Under 12 boys, Under 14 Girls and Longboards. These were highly contested with some outstanding performances by 6yr olds Kitty Brewer and Arthur Carey in the Novices with a demonstration of controlled surfing. Stars of the future

The Under 12s was dominated by Ben Bates with Gus Brewer and Tom Carey playing catch up. Length of ride was a key feature in this division with all surfers showing maturity for a young age.

The under 14 girls saw an uncharacteristic exit of Gould girls, Phoebe and Tabatha at the semi final stage. Taking full advantage of the situation was Jenna Kleis who managed to squeeze past Megan Vibert, Tess Letherbarrow and Jenny Walker to take the honours.

The Longboards saw a closely contested battle. It was Cole Jouanny who took the title with a mix of old and new style. Scott Letherbarrow also performed well and ousted out the current British Schoolboy champion, Will Glenn and Matt Chapman.
