Nathan Elms and Matt Chapman had an excellent week's surfing in Hossegor with the British Junior team finishing off with a contest against local surf club Vieux-Boucau
Edited report from the last day's action www.britsurf.co.uk
In clean 2-3 foot waves at Vieux-Boucau, the contest got under way, with some great surfing from Jobe Harris, Luke Dillon, Liam Turner. Matt Chapman, Miles Lee Hargreaves and Nathan Elms, all progressing through to the next round. With some innovative surfing from the french on their local break, the crowd were entertained with some good carving outback manouvers, and followed by some small barrels and floaters on the shore break. Nathan Elms and Jobe Harris impressed the judges and progressed to the final, and with a 3rd and 4th place the visitors maintained the respect of the local surfers. Nathan told us " it was great to be surfing a contest against the French, as it was their home break they really knew the waves, but this really pushed me forward. I learnt from them, where they were sitting and i think i really raised my game. I was happy to get to the final as both myself and Jobe surfed really well"

Alex Vibert 15YRS takes KOTG crown in Jersey
A small onshore swell came through on Sunday afternoon giving Quiksilver UK a chance to look at emerging talent in Jersey during the 50th anniversary year of the Jersey Surfboard club. Good turn out considering conditions with all divisions scrapping for the KOTG title. The under 16s was the showcase for the weather battered crowd and contest organisers, with outstanding performances from all the competitors. Alex Vibert, AIB Surfer of the year 2008, was able to perform in the small surf with some solid surfing executing at least 3 turns on every wave hotly pursued by Freddie Seymour. Nathan Elms struggled in the small conditions but was able to shrugg off the challenge of rising star Josh le Marquand.
The under 14s was dominated by Ben Bates who has won this event for the second time in this age group.
The under 12s, after a weeks training in France during half term put up a good display with both Hayden Bishop and Aaron Rowe getting some snappy turns in. Max Bennett 5yrs with help from mum, Jo, also showed solid control and was able to change direction which impressed the judges.
Thanks for the sponsor Quiksilver for laying on the event and for the Watersplash for all the catering.

SALTROCK OPEN
CROYDE,DEVON 23/5/09
Nathan Elms reaches the final of the Saltrock Open under 16 division at Croyde over the weekend. Winning all his heats to lead up to his first UK Pro Tour final ever, Elms had a clear chance of winning. Elms started well by catching a long walling righthander. Powering off the bottom, Elms performed two critical snaps under the the lip, setting him up for the inside section which was lining up along the rocks at Down End point. Struggling with the backwash he performed a further two round house cutbacks to finish off his wave. This is where it went downhill for Elms as the Newquay duo of Tom Good and Leon Mansfield with Croyde local Beau Bromham began to notch up high scoring waves. Still having only a one wave score , Elms waited for another set wave to maximise his score . He eventually ran out of time and was pushed into 4th spot.
On reflection Elms said “ You have to get your waves in quick if you want to stand any chance of staying close to the UK lads. I just did’nt get a second wave and that put me in a massive disadvantage. I saw Leon Mansfield get an incredible left and get a 7.1. I was looking for an 8. It just did’nt come.”
Elms , part of a 5 man squad including Chantelle Coote, Bradley Ferguson, Matt Chapman and Freddie Seymour. Seymour reached the semi final of the under 16s and Matt Chapman managed to knock out Pro Junior favourites, Lyndon Wake and Seb Smart in the Round 1 of the Pro Junior Division. Ferguson had the unfortunate match up with Freddie Seymour in the quarter final stages of the under 16s along with eventual finalist Beau Bromham. Even with a clear strategy to block the UK competitors, Ferguson was 0.1 out of a semi final spot.
Chantelle Coote got a 3rd spot in her 1st Round of the under 16 Girls
Organisers were quick to praise the efforts of the Jersey Team which had certainly upset afew UK competitors and proved the Jersey under 16s can compete at this level.
This is the first of the UK PRO series. The next is the Gul Grommets in Newquay on the 14th June
